■ To focus on greenhouse gas reduction after inventory setup 

On the 9th of June, LS Cable (Chairman & CEO Christopher Koo) became the first in the cable industry to complete implementation and internal verification of a ‘greenhouse gas inventory’ and held a signing ceremony at LS Tower with the Korea Energy Management Corporation (KEMCO) for the third external verification of the greenhouse gas inventory.

The ‘Greenhouse gas inventory’ is part of an integrated system to measure and statistically assess greenhouse gas emissions for each business, production process and facility in response to the enforcement decree announced in April referred to as the ‘Framework Act on Low Carbon, Green Growth.’ The act stipulates that each company publish a mandatory greenhouse gas report, make material efforts to reduce emissions and set a cap on greenhouse gas emissions. As such, Kim Bong-hyo, the head of Environmental Planning Team of LS Cable explained that the inventory implementation was essential. 

Having completed greenhouse gas inventory implementation and internal verification, LS Cable will obtain certification of verification by July after KEMCO’s field inspection and document review.

LS Cable will accelerate green management through a variety of greenhouse gas reduction methods, such as improving the recovery rate of SF6 gas (refer to terminology), improving burner efficiency through aluminum dissolution, operating automatic dimmers with timers and introducing eco-friendly LED lighting for signboards, lighting and emergency lamps, etc. 

※ Terminology: Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Gas
Sulfur hexafluoride (Chemical Formula: SF6) is a compound of fluorine and sulfur. Fluorine atoms form an octahedral structure around a sulfur atom. SF6 gas has been widely used as an insulating material since the 1960s. Although harmless to the human body, SF6 gas is known to contribute to global warming. Together with CO2, HFCs and PFCs, SF6 is a representative greenhouse gas and is a restricted substance by the Kyoto Protocol.
